OMHS installs security system at ED entrance

Officer, metal detector to help ensure safety

OMHS has implemented efforts to heighten security and privacy for patients, visitors and staff in the hospital Emergency Department (ED).

Anyone entering the waiting room and admission area in the ED will be required to pass through a metal detector, attended by a security officer 24 hours a day—seven days a week. The system will screen for pocket knives, guns or other metal objects considered as weapons.

The Novacomm Access Control VestibuleTM, a security system widely used by banks throughout the US, is the equipment OMHS installed as a prototype.

OMHS took the proactive step to improve safety, which is now typical of hospitals across the US. Hospital security also gathered input from physicians who practice in the ED before purchasing the Novacomm system.

“We want to provide a safe and secure environment for patients and their families, as well as our employees, volunteers and visitors,” says Ron Velez, security supervisor. 

Individuals in wheelchairs, or who due to injuries or other reasons do not have the ability to pass through the metal detector, can access the ED admitting and visitor area through double glass doors.

“If someone needs to go through the double doors, the security officer on duty will scan them with a wand to detect metal objects,” Velez says.

In addition to the front entrance, back hallways connecting the ED to the first floor and parking garages are now accessible only by OMHS staff, physicians or other healthcare provides via badge swipe.

More than 63,000 patients seek treatment in the ED each year, not counting family and friends who accompany them.

The ED staff includes 12 physicians and 100+ employees.
