Understanding Your OMHS Bill

At OMHS, we are committed to making sure our patients understand the billing process. Being an informed healthcare consumer means you'll enjoy more peace of mind as you recover from your procedure.

Filing Your Claim

1. After your visit to OMHS, we will submit a bill (also called a claim) to your insurance company. Your claim lists the hospital services you received during your stay.

2. You will receive a letter confirming the information on the claim. This letter is not a bill.

3. Once your insurance pays its portion of the bill, you may receive a report called an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) that shows how the claim was paid. OMHS will then send you a bill for the balance due.

More Than One Bill

Your bill may acutally arrive as several smaller bills, broken down by individual services, such as:

  • emergency
  • pathology
  • anesthesia
  • radiology

These bills may come from different providers and may be sent separately from your OMHS bill. While this may seem confusing, it is necessary, as it allows each provider to ensure payment for the specific services they provided.

Other Charges

The following are some of the other types of bills you may receive:

  • Physician Charges
In most cases, OMHS doctors are employed independently, and generate their own bills for services. However, some physicians are employed by OMHS and their services are billed by Cooperative Health; these charges are separate from hospital services.
  • Consultation Charges
Your physician may consult with a specialist or other physicians to help them treat your condition. One example might be a radiologist who interprets x-ray results or a pathologist who interprets lab results. Their charges are billed separately even though you may not have been directly seen by the consulting physician.
  • Hospital Charges
You may receive a bill from OMHS that covers many different types of services, such as: surgical and testing procedures, pharmacy, medical supplies, nursing services, and therapy.
